Kens Top Tips For Keeping Fish Healthy
When you first get your aquarium, don’t be too quick to fill it with fish.
The best advice is to add a few fish at a time. By allowing small groups of fish to settle in in stages you will find that your fish will coexist happily. Too many fish introduced at the same time will create a stressful environment and encourage the fish to attack each other as they fight for territory.
Keep the water clean. A good idea is to replace about a third of the volume of the water every couple of weeks. For ease of use and best results, use a gravel vacuum siphon. You can find these for sale in our aquatics department.
Give your fish a varied diet and try not to over feed them. Excess food can cause your fish to be lethargic and make them more prone to ill health. Wasted food can also be detrimental to the water quality of your tank.
If it’s well looked after, a common gold fish can live for 10 to 20 years. My oldest fish is 18 years old!
Remember, I’m here to help, so if you need any advice on anything aquatic … call on Ken.
George The Giant Gourami
Next time you visit Bretby, look out for George the giant Gourami. George lives in our aquatics department. He’s quite friendly and because of his size needs a large tank to swim around in. You can’t miss him... he’s quite a celebrity.
George started his life at Bretby when he was quite tiny and his current size proves that it’s a good idea to do a little bit of research on your fish before you buy them. At Bretby we have lots of interesting and informative books on fish and of course you can always ask Ken.
Fishy Facts
Giant Gouramis are native to India where they are bred for food and as pond fish they can grow to around 30 inches in length.
They live in fresh or brackish water, particularly slow-moving areas such as swamps, lakes and large rivers.
Giant Gouramis are capable of breathing moist air, so can survive out of water for long periods.
