Hardy Plants

If you are starting a garden from scratch, one of the first things that you will need to consider after the hard landscaping and shrubs is the position of your hardy plants.

Hardy plants are a group of plants that are otherwise known as herbaceous perennials; they stay in the garden all year round and usually require little winter protection. Their foliage usually dies down in the autumn - when the plant enters a dormant stage - before re-emerging in the spring.

Often the dead seed heads make attractive features in the winter garden too.

Hardy plants often form the mainstay of cottage garden plants as traditionally the seeds could be shared and once established, there was little additional cost.

One thing to remember, is that before planting try to give the plant the best possible start by preparing the ground accordingly; for example by adding bone meal to the soil used to back fill the hole. Old gardeners used to say “Sixpence for the plant and a shilling for the hole”.
